I've literally been on the internet for hours!

What is the best skimmer for a 1000lt tank?

I was looking at something rated 2000lt or more?
There is so many out there?

Good luck with your search BJvanwyk. I am in a similar situation and the options seem endless. With all the different internal and external designs within each brand it doesnt make the job any easier.

eliminate the skimmer you need by looking at the following:

Species to be kept? fish, softies, lps, sps or full blown mixed reef?
Size of system? (total capacity incl sump)
Other forms of filtration? bacterial additions will dictate size of skimmer needed aswell as you should have a skimmer rated roughly 30-50% more than your total volume to assist with this method of filtration.
    And reliability and LOCAL support...

those are just a few guidlines...

Vertex, JNS, Deltec, Reefocto (and dare i even say skimz once the kinks are sorted out) are all fantastic skimmers.. and will pull heaps of skimmate ....

Can I have a sump... With my skimmer 1st chamber, 2nd chambe a big DSB, 3rd chanber lots of live rock(there will be even more live rock in the tank) and in my 4th chamber some mud with mangrove plants... And then finally my last chamber I want to put my return pump and reactors if I need it?

well, the thing that really is the deciding factor on which skimmer is the best, is the thickness of your wallet.

so first specify how much do you want to spend on a skimmer. Then look what is available in that price range.

ive been threw a number of different skimmers and makes in my time as a reefer and i keep trying to find one to match or out perform my Deltec. For consistancy of performance and quality of skim mate Deltec might be expensive but they are unbeatable.

i'll get a vertex and try them out on my new tanks and see how they go as I am always looking for new equipment.

Given a thick wallet and the desire for a quality skimmer on a well stocked mixed reef of 1000l or so id go with a deltec SC 2060, its not fancy with bells and whistles sort of skimmer, it just simply produced dark stinky skimate for years after being turned on.

Look at how much power required to run. cos that is where the rubber meets the road on the latest top of the range skimmers. other than that any of the abovementioned akimmers set up correctly is the best. whereas even the best skimmer ifit is set up badly is a useless skimmer. imo

Good comment. Makes sense, but does undergravel filtration play a role? Have a similar problem in deciding on a skimmer for my 1500l fully mixed system. Thanks.
