so as the title suggests, what do we SA reefers want for this hobby...
this is not a flame thread, but something to list all the issues we have as reefers here in SA....

    the more constructive the better

Love it Lean! Yeah, that and cheaper solar. We have a wonderful free and powerful resource sitting in the heavens. I want to harvest the SUN!!!!!!!!!!
Also, better knowledge from LFS, people need to trust their LFS. I strive for that at Idol Marine. Reefers in general need to share their knowledge with others, not be shy, we need to invest in the sea of knowledge so many of us carry in ourselves. GIVE ME YOUR KNOWLEDGE!

I think understanding what you are doing and the consequences to everything one does and the effects it will cause, our lfs (some of them) just want the sales but are not perturbed about the welfare of corals or fish as if they die you will go back and buy again, and this is an expensive hobby, so first understanding and more info on everything one does to maintain a healthy system. My own2 cents worth

    Less politics

Getting a bit tired of 'he/she said this and is friends with that person so I can't support those shops and they push up the prices cause they want to make a profit....'
Reefing seems to have lost its title as a Hobby, almost likes it's become more of a place to gossip and belittle others and then complain about every single aspect of keeping a tank. Maybe next year we can all ( and I know I need to be included in this) try and make the Hobby, and MASA, what it used to be like a few years ago...more helping each other, sharing knowledge and having a good time in general.

An indication from LFS which corals are aquacultured and which harvested. This will help us buy coral in a responsible way.
A local coral farm would also be nice.

Has anyone calculated the difference in power consumption for using sunlight for your lighting vs. the extra cooling costs you'll need? Was thinking about having an outdoor refugium with seagrass but I'm concerned about the heat factor.

the solar tubes i am looking at dont add any heat to the house, but outside diff story, what about evap cooling or a hybrid, even if a chiller is needed, one only would have to cool the return water from the fuge slowly through a 1/4 hp chiller (approx 200W)

Evap cooling is really inefficient in Durban because of the humidity, but it might offset chiller costs a little. It would be a 100-150 liter refugium on a 1000 liter main tank, so I'm guessing there wouldn't be a huge amount of extra heat.

and at the size a small chiller can cool the water before the main tank

I've been thinking of doing a coral frag farm in my garage for quite a while, what kind of ligislative issues can there be?

My wish list might be a bit far fetched but if I could have anything for this hobby it would be to see all livestock captive bred. Its the one thing I hate abouth this hobby is the amount of live stock that dies on route to our tanks.

none, see my threads here about coral and fish breeding, from a hobbyist point of view its all legal...

the issue i see is if you plan to sell to lfs's or maybe online, people will expect it to be cheaper

If its a hobby then great but when you want to run it as a business you have to weigh up cost vs return so I think its unrealistic for people to expect it to be cheaper if you are farming for the porpose of selling.
