Hi all, I am a complete newbie to this hobby. I bought a boyu TL550 this weekend (After a fit of temporary insanity) and have set it up as far as I could. I currently have no LS in as I understand that the system should first mature. After reading a lot of the comments on this forum I have a couple of questions though. So here goes:
    • What would be the best way to set-up the filter at the back? (I want to eventually have a small reef tank)
    • Is it ok if I only have lava rock in the beginning while the system matures? When should I add LR or is it not necessary?

Yip! You should add as much live rock as possible for the cycling process. Basically your tank will only start cycling once the live rock is in. (Most of it) If you add only a bit of live rock and you add again later, your tank will go through a mini cycle or even start the cycle process all over again depending on the amount you put in..

Live rock basically have bacterial and living life on them. When you place it in your system some die-off takes place and created ammonia spikes which triggers the cycle process!;)

Welcome to MASA. Please do not use Lava rock. Rather purchase live rock from the beginning.

    WELCOME TO MASA.

There is a difference between "lava rock" and "live rock". IMO Lava rock has no place in a marine aquarium. Live rock yes.

If you are using the Lava rock as a bacteria colonisation media rather remove it and add bio balls or a better aerobic filter media.

As a Newbie i would recomend a DSB type filtration system. However there are many different systems. You should read and ask as much as you can before going any further with your system. Do it right and slowly will go a long way to you future enjoyment.

    Welcome to MASA.

If you want to have a jungle instead of a reef tank, then you must use Lava rock. Lava rock releases loads of phosphate into the water. Made the mistake in 1995 already for you, to warn you. ;)

Live rock should have some visible life on it. Just a wet rock doesn´t make it to a live rock. There are a few LFS out there, who sell wet rock as live rock. Make some friends here on MASA from your area and ask which LFS is reliable and honest and which not.

Impatience can end up in disaster, so do your home work first and rather take advice from a fellow reefer than from a fishy LFS.

Thanks for the replies, and the warm welcome. I think what is confusing is the fact that the guys at the LFS tell you one thing but then you read so much to the contrary.

So, I should remove the "lava rock" asap, if only somebody could have told me this before I paid for the "lava rock".:nono: Then get some live rock in the system.

I also saw on another thread that I should not have the bio balls (black hollow ball goed) in the filter, is that correct?

Yip, NO BIO BALLS! This is used for fresh water fish and creates nitrate issues in marine systems.

Always check everything with MASA first before you buy anything from your local LFS. This will save you plenty of money and frustration in the future.
