I have recently also had to make the same decision. Let me tell you I have eventually after a month of considering my options stuck with a canister filter and gutter filter.

For me though I added more sand to my tank. This will eventually become a DSB according to some. I have added bio-balls to my gutter filter to immitate the sump filtration system. For me it is working and the only problem I still have is the tempreture fluctuations due to the lid on my tank which traps the heat.

I think ideally a sump would work better and make more sense but if you keep the filter material in your canister and gutter filter clean (once a week at least) then your tank should run properly.

On your original question well you need to try and run your sump for a few weeks before it actually starts doing the job it was created for. You could install a sump while your tank is still running but you would have to keep your canister filter running during that time still I would dare to say

Add to this that I do not enough space really to expand :whistling:

Build an outside overflow box which feeds via a 38mm hole on the side pannel at the required water height. You can then drop the water level in the display tank drill the hole plumb everything and whenn you are ready up the water level again and the overflow will start working.

Here is pics from my 1.2 with outside overflow box

@Trev, did you experience any problems so far with irrigation fittings?

irrigation pipes work, but just use them for the return line. My return line is made out of irrigation pipe and fittings and doesn't leak
