Hi there, we are new to the forum. We have a 1.2m jebo(yikkes), a canister filter and a protien skimmer. We need help to build a failsafe sump for a dsb and the ps. Nitites and ammo are fine but nitrates are 50. 1x Mono, 1x scat, 2x percula clowns, 1xyellow tailed blue damsel, 1xblue hermit and 1xhalloween crab, and a 4 spot yellow cleaner wrasse. No corals yet. Still don't have system up and running well enough yet. We have so many questions. We joined the site to answer some and now we have even more.
We know that the only stupid question is one we DONT ask so we will promise not to be stupid.:p

    Welcome to MASA!!

    a couple of questions:
How long has your tank been running?
How long has the fish been in the system?
What do you have in the canister filter?
What type of substrate have you got in the tank?
Do you have any Live Rock in the tank?
    Which skimmer have you got?

    water changes

Thanks, weekly water changes, using tetra marine nitrate remover, tetra marine aquasafe.
Have removed the "bio balls" from the canister this morning and added some sinted (spelling) glass chips and some broken bits of live rock.

    Welcome naughty.

Firstly that canister is going to cause you a major headache but will get to that shortly.

What you need to do is get the overflow sorted out on your tank - either go and buy one from Lanzo or biuld yourself one using PVC piping. Then get the sump installed.
I have the 2m Jebo with cabinet so I have 3 interconnect sumps connect with PVC piping drilled into them. Once you have the sump sorted get yourself a decent skimmer (TS2 will be great for your system) and let the DSB get going (around 3 months)

Then after all that, tackle the canister - remove everything from the canister bit by bit weekly so the system does not crash. Then ony run your carbon, phos remover / nitrate sponge etc in there otherwise you will always struggle with nitrates! (Been there done that)

Got any pics to show us - we will be able to guide you better in your quest if we could see what is going on there.

    workin on it

    Hey pugsly,

Thanks, the overflow is working - thanks JVS! Got the 100l tank now and the sand. What wold recomend for the sump design? We have a skimmer, so that will go in the first chamber with the water intake pipe. The glass dividers in between are the next thing to build. I have seen many designs. Some very complicated! I want simple. Have room for the deep sand bed in there. Got any plans? the design in my head is as follows: fisrt chamber is small sourounding the intake pipe with filter medium. That overflows into the skimmer chamber. That then flows under the glass into the live rock chamber. This overflows across the deepsand bed and down into the return chamber and back into the tank. Have I got it right?
Also, have read that the dsb should be "built" slowly - adding 5cm +- per week of sand. Is this neccesssary? I figure yes if the sand is not "live". Or do we just throw it in and pray? Hhahaha
