I'm confused. This white stuff only apeared today. This was sold to me as live rock about a month ago and did not have anything on them. The white stuff apeared out of nowhere today? Does this meanthis is actualy a coral that is alive?

    Hi

This is an interesting coral and you have a lot of it.

It is a "soft" coral, but uses iron in the water to build its skeleton, that is actually blue.

I have one that grew from the underside of a plug frag, it is 15cm away from my 150w MH and have turned dark brown with lots of polyps. Not to agressive, have lost one battle with my birdsnst, and have won one another with it.

@Eben was the "live rock" almost dead Heliopora you bought brown in colour
& how long ago did you buy it?

For those that had Heliopora in their tanks
What colours of Heliopora did you have.

What are your tanks parameters at the moment.

    Hi BigFish,

I bought the rock about 5 weeks ago. To me it seemed dead at the time. Just the coral skeletons with no polyps at all. So big were the surprise when this "rock rose from the dead"
I have some more in my tank but no polyps on them yet.

Light brown or purplish = live. Blue = dead

Thats why i asked because his looked brown when it was "dead" .
He bought it as "live rock" but now it is regenerating initially as white .

As from the photos (damages parts) the "dead coral" skeleton looks blue

    Eben confirm?

New growth on Heliopora is white. That's usually the edges or damaged areas that are recovering. There is good polyp extension in your pics, so that means it's pretty healthy.
