Firstly a big howsit to all here....been watching from the sidelines for some time!! The amount and quality of information available on MASA is priceless!!
I've been out of this hobby for 15 years but growing up in EL I had marines for many years. But that was back in the day when reverse flow undergravel filters were cool!!:whistling: Boy things have changed!!! So anyway for the last few months i've been in the process of buying a fishing tackle shop and stress has been running high, so decided to throw myself into a little project to occupy my mind!!!
I had a choice.....buy a labrador or set up a tank.......so this is the journey so far for my 1.2m labrador that does not fetch but gives the room a awesome blue glow!!:yeahdude:

So it started with a Std 1200x450x450 and a stand inherited from a mate......
    ....and some supervision....
Bossi and myself learnt that cutting glass is not as easy as it looks but we got there in the end. A old 3ft became my sump....
Without mates this project would never have happened......some modifications were done to the stand. Was 50x50 square tubing. Became 50x50 with 50x75 top frame and a taken down to 900 high. Bulletproof!!!!
The surface rust on the stand was dealt with by my electric drill and a wire brush and my own sweat and a little blood........
    But eventually looked like this.
4 x cans of Hammertite later I learned it would have been far more cost effective (half the price) to by a litre can and paint it on!! But dont think the finish would have been as nice...
Check the flash bouncing off the hammerite suspended in the air.........after cleaning it out my nostrils with meths i needed many :peroni:

Plumbing was then done........now time for some honesty......I needed to drill 6 x 50mm holes for this tank....by the time I was done I had drilled 14..:whistling: This was due partly to some bad planning and largely due to me being a douchbag.....I will elaborate no further.......its done now, and i can drill holes in glass like a machine:yeahdude:!!
    My durso's..........
Then the bathwater test..........no drama except very noisy water in pipes!! Eventually sorted by fitting valves.....now wisper quiet.....have to check them every now and then:thumbup:
Drained and busy fitting (hopelessly inadequate) electrics.......this will be remedied shortly!!!
Calling in another favour I scored some wicked bamboo flooring.....
Some more sweat a lot of bad language and a little more blood later it started looking pretty good.
    Getting there.....
So then it was time to fill her up....sand in DSB....

So yesterday went and spent more money that i don't have and got some pretty decent lights for a really good price, some much more suitable sustrate and a few kilos of Fiji Blue liverock.........
The moonlights drive my chick wild...............result:yeahdude:
And the end result...........or should I say the beginning.

Damn its good to be back in this hobby!!!

Have a 2ft light unit like that, one of the 12 000k tubes went after about two weeks. But not a bad unit fot its price.

    Nice work.
I like the wood work, see you got magnets holding it in place.

One thing I would change. Your sump got 4 glass panes.
I will remove the two pieces next to the filter wool. And have a larger DSB.

In your display, what substrate did you use?

Hey Riaan, thanks bud. Correct on the magnets. I like the idea of no visible handles and being able to remove all the panels completely for maintenace etc....
As for the sump, there is some method behind the madness of the extra panel.....at some point i would like to upgrade my skimmer at which point i would remove the panel furthest left to make space.....the only reason for the panel now is to raise the water level for my hang-on type boyu skimmer. I have fine crushed coral in the DT now.....couldn't cope witht the natural sea sand and couldn't afford anything more fancy........
