Hey thought it would be interesting to see what people total watts per day come to for EG. I have 2 x 250w MH on for 8 Hrs and 4x 54w T5s for 10 Hrs. Therefore 500 x 8 = 3500 and 216 x 10 = 2160. So the total watts per day is 5660.

Lets also say what we keep under that amount of lighting. [SPS only]

I'm interested in seeing who has a good sps tank with the lowest Watts per day. So if you have the lowest be prepared to load pics of healthy corals.

Wowee!!!

;)If, I May refine your calculation:

500 *8= 4000w
not 3500:p

MH consumption is substantially more than bulb wattage.
Alot depends on gear-lamp-reflector-housing combination.

2*250W + 4*54W T5 is more than adequate for upto 1.8m L*0.8m W *0.8m H

250W uses closer to 350W/h on standard electromagnetic ballast

T5 54W draws almost 60W.

SO , roughly
5600+ 2400= 8kWh
or 8 "units" metered

Electronic gear may reduce MH use by 30%, with SOME reduction in output PAR.

Agreeing with Darryl.
We may have found our "power blackhole":whistling:

Tanks with glowing, colourful SPS may not be BEST and HEALTHIEST , they may just be MOST colourful.

I applaud you IF trying to find a lower electricity - higher biological value return solution.
