    Hi Guys

I need advice please, I started my tank last night running fresh water as a test, now I know this topic has come up a few times. The waterfall over my overflow is extremely noise how can I make it softer?
I don’t have space in my overflow box for a Durso? Any ideas? I silenced the drain sound by using a ball valve it’s just the waterfall.

Have you got any sort of valve on the down pipe that exits the overflow?

yip, I closed it a bit which raised the water in the overflow and that stopped the drain sound. I just have the waterfall noise still as the water go’s over the overflow

rather replace the ball valve with a gate valve. Easier to set and you can really fine tune it. Then you can set it so that the water level inside the overflow chamber is about half way the tank depth. That would solve the noise.

But the valve can block up. I had a blue green chromis going over the slim line overflow and it ended up blocking my overflow. Was less than 1mm from flooding my display. Opened the valve and the display drained back to original level. Found the chromis hiding in the sump a few minutes later. He survived.

    Show us a pic?

There is a place in Oxford road, Strydom park, they sell all the valves and pipes you can dream of... The name will come to me now...

ok cool, will give that a try tonight, I did an experiment last night, I closed the valve to check if the display will over flow, It didn’t, It seems I got the water level right by accident. If the return should get blocked the return chamber will run dry not good for the pump but at least it doesn’t overflow. [FONT=&quot]What is the difference between a ball valve and a gate valve? Gate valves are more expensive that ball valves.

Idol Marine used to have some.

    that is a ball valve.

Replace both those 90 degree bends with 45 degree bends. The water splashing down on the first bend also makes a noise. The pipe between the two bends will be angles at 45 degrees, no problem.

and you do not have a slimline...

Why not fit a standpipe? And use a Soil vent valve as a durso, diameter is about 70mm

Take a piece of filter wool sheeting the size of a slice of bread. cut the centre out so that the pipe at the bottom is open the water will overflow onto the matting quietly and flow down the tube.
