    Hi All.

Have had my 550 for about 2 months and all is going well with my water parameters and tank is now looking nicely stocked and fish (6) and corals (6) seem happy.

My biggest problem is with the water temperature. I am using the standard heater (in first chamber with sponge and floss) set to 26 degrees but my water temperature still fluctuates between 24 degrees in the middle of the night to nearly 30 degrees in the middle of the day (and Cape town temperatures don't vary that much!!).

In order to stabilize temp I take out heater in the morning, open up the lid and monitor temp all day (thank goodness I work from home!!). I add in an extra in at heater at night (and had a few sleepless nights!).

What is the best solution for my problem - buy a more sensitive heater? add heater onto timer? What is the easiest way to add an extra fan in the hood (being female and not wanting to do a major overhaul :)

Comments would be great :whistling: Don't want cooked fishy

I would invest in a good heater if I were you. The cheaper heaters work but they are not that reliable. And it sounds like urs is broken.

think you are right but thnk the problem is also the hood - lights too hot and closed lid.

What is the easiest way to change to LED (do the magnetic ones work?) or should probably look into some sort of extra fan....

I agree with Charl. What type of heater are you using? The temp in my Boyu used to vary like that. Until I replaced the cheap heater with a Jaeger. The temp was more stable after that. I must admit though, during the summertime in Johannesburg I had to open the lid and have the cooling fan on the tank.

The hood and lights do play a role in the fluctuations of the temp, but not by that margin. I never had those big swings on my tank. On a very hot day you might get the temp going up a few degrees! If you are having this problem in winter,I can only think that it is the heater.

Sounds like the Heater needs to be replaced and maybe get another Temp Reader...I've got 2...one on either side...trust me they don't give the same reading......but I use the "average reading" of the two...:p I've got the TL450 and heat is a problem...Durban can be very humid....I'm a SAHM so I've got the time to "monitor" my Tank and have thus found a solution to my heat problem...I freeze little plastic bottles of RO water and place it in one of my Chambers and exchange every hour...or 3...depending on the Temp...

Okay, new thermometer in (in main DT) and new heater in(also in main DT) and lid open during the day - yesterday things seemed to be fairly stable, holding thumbs for today!
