I do about a 10% every 3 weeks or so ... it differs for people ... don't think there is a formula.

I am busy doing my research in anticipation of starting a marine tank in the next few months, and I have been meaning to post a question like this for a while.

Anyone else willing to share how often and how much you change?

this to me is a debatable subject, most people will tell beginners you need to do them, and not explain why or if they really help.

there are several reasons for doing them and several for not, i will list my view after 20+ years in this hobby

the main reasons people say you should:
    1. nutrient export
why to me its a waste, 10% water change will remove 0.1ppm per 1ppm of nitrate, so if your tank is producing more than the 0.1ppm per cycle, then you just wasting money. however in smaller nanos this is not an issue and actually beneficial.

    2. element imbalance correction
if you dont dose trace elements and the like then doing a large 30-50% water change every 6-12months will help

    3. cleaning the tank/gravel
this is where i land up doing mine, i keep the gravel clean and my sump clean, the water loss etc is about 10% every 3 months, my aim here is not nutrient export

    4. because people told me too
well enough said, more reefers should question everything in the beginning and get a firm understanding of what processes and functions happen

    5. your current biological method requires it.
Zeovit etc require you to do 5% weekly etc, this is out of my scope, but what i do believe is if you following something, do it 100%

The biggest con for me with waterchanges is the instability it causes with params, striving for a consistent param stability is key and i feel that a weekly 10% swing in params goes against this.

    hope this helps
