    Hi All Fellow Reefers,

As you all know I was strugling with my tank over the last 2months, and almost quitted the hobby for good....
Please Help : Is this diatoms???? - Marine Aquariums of South Africa

I developed a brown gunk in my tak that literaly took everything over... I spend more than R5,000.00 to try and get my tank back to normal, from doing massife water changes every week, spending like 2 hours every day brushing of the brown gunk(K@k), using filter wool .... I changed the globes, dose bacteria (4 dif brands) even went so var as to build an algea scrubber, all went well and the tank started to look better only to find the tank tonight covered in brown k@k all over again... fumed with rage/anger I throw my magnet cleaner against the wall screaming like a mad man, only to find the cause of the problem... the magnet got some sort off metal in the inside and is developing the brown k@k... spend like 2 hours again cleaning the tank... Will need to do a massive water change over the weekend again:eek:

    Take a look at this...

Yes, and the mettal in the inside is reacting with the salt water...

Looks like rust, but its more like a mud substrated kinda brown gunk, like rust mixed with water

mayb it happens after a while. saltwater eats through the glue that keeps unit togehter over time and leaks into it. makes sense. damn will remove mine now.

Someone advised me once to never leave your magnet in the tank as things grow on your magnet and can cause scratching of you glass. Looks like you just gave us another reason. Thanks for sharing

I also had a crazy diatom outbreak. Tried everything for 6 months and no luck, eventually just shut the whole tank down. Maybe it was my magnet as well, it was also in the tank the whole time.

    And diatoms love iron!

In fact (sorry to go slightly off topic) scientists have been doing experiments where they add chellates and oxides of iron to the surface of ocean water and taking fluorescence readings with satellites to determine productivity. In fact, they were thinking of using this method to produce a carbon sink to combat global warming. The carbon sequestered in to the little diatom bastards would be locked up for millions of years when the diatoms sink to the ocean floor as marine snow. After doing calcs and producing isotopic models via in situ experiments, it was determined to be ineffective...

Moral of the story is... Well... Er... You have probably been doing a similar little experiment in your tank without even knowing it;)

Keep your head up @Express Reef! I'm sure you have found the source of your problem!

BTW, how old is that magnet cleaner?

must have been @Manic, the diatoms feeds on the mettal... running my skimmer wet now, gave my whole tank a "tooth brush, brush" placed filter wool in the overflow to catch all the gunk, and I used some seachem clarity... must say the tank looks nice again... dosed some special blend now... hope it helps... Will do a water change tomorrow after work
