Anyone have a Male Bangai Cardinal for sale or know of someone that has one for sale. Please. I'm getting desperate.... (or actually my female is getting desperate now). Shes laying her eggs on my flowpumps every 40 days.
Every LFS has small Cardinals but they cannot confirm that theyre males :(

    Thanks Guys,
Carlos, there is other differences but they arent as easy to spot. The males have a longer posterior dorsal fin than the females. Females have rounder bodies than the males.

    Some info from Reefs.org:
    Sexing Banggais
This is the most asked question I receive, and the one question I cannot answer fully. Even though I have seen over 300 banggaiԳ I am only 50/50 on juvenile animals (animals under 1-1.5inches SVL). When the animals reach sexual maturity (12-14 months), then the jawline takes on a characteristic structure, particularly the male which gets squared off. The second dorsal fin is an excellent characteristic, as the males second dorsal extends past the caudal peduncle, however this flowing fin is often nipped off by other fish. The most accurate sexing method: My best method of sexing banggaiճ is using my establish male [the original male banggai from the article]. I introduce another banggai into his tank and within 10 mins he either is trying to kill him (male) or trying to mate with it (female)...HE IS 100% ACCURATE!!! I have sexed many friends banggai this way. Alternatively you can buy 4 or 5 banggais allow then to reach sexual maturity and they will pair off, and please, please, return the unpaired banggais.

 This is not going to be an easy task!!!

    A Male and female pair:
"The male has longer fins and stronger spots on the body. And if you compare the two of them, the male has a more pronounced 'bulldog' jaw"

Thanks for the trouble. I looked at my female and she also has a long second fin. so dont know if the fin thing is fool proof. Read on the internet that 2 females can still tolerate each other. But 2 males will fight immediately.. I know mine is defenitely a female. so If I add wrong, they wont kill each other. This is gonna be nerve recking!

Thanks for the offer @Dot Dash. If we can be sure its a male, I'd be very pleased to buy him. How old is the fish. The older, the more likely to see the difference

I have no idea how old the fish is. Will post some pics as soon as I can. Maybe you will be able to sex it from the pics. Have to add, not small like the fish you see in the LFS.

There is a better way of sexing them. Will post the pic now. The fin thing doesn't work because some fish nip at their fins and sexing by looking at the jaw is unreliable.

I had a pair and the female wouldn't let the male eat. Think he had eggs in his mouth so he stopped eating and died. I'm also looking for a male at the moment.

Fantastic thread you added @Manic. Thanks so much. I added the explanation of the sexing from Luckyfish's thread. Now I need to get out my macrolense and check out my Banggai!!!:whistling:

    How to sex them?

That is a bit tricky. The best way to do it is, to feed the cardinals until they won´t eat any more. So their belly is full and round. Now you can see the difference.
That works for adults, but for 5 months old cardinals, it is extremly difficult to see.

Take a closer look at the following pictures.
    This one is a female.

Between the fins you can see these "thorns". There must be word for it. Steve? Can you help out with that?
The first thorn is sometimes not visible. If visible, both thorns are thin and the second thorn is much longer than the first one.

This is a male in the picture below.

The males first thorn is much thicker than the second. Shaped as a triangle.
