I am looking at battery operated pumps (not to keen on some sort of UPS think they suck :))

So I have been looking at DC and battery operated items.

So far there are two runners Tunze and VorTech.

Now the Vortech runs for 20 hours (flow pump) havent been able to fund the Tunze ratings.

What do you guys think - experiance and opinions which ones are better?

both are excelent makes of pump, but personally id choose a pump for what it does 99% of the time (pump water around your aquarium) not what it does in case of a power outage.

What are the needs of the tank, ie how big is the system, what do you want to keep and how much water do you want to push around the tank. Then decide on the make and which pump. Between the two brands you have mentioned i like tunze the most, but i am not sure of the battery backup systems they have (i live in a country with stable energy supply), but i also like the esthetics of the vortex, the controlability and the ease of placing the pumps where you cant view them easily.

but the first thing to work out is what do you want the pumps to do, and how.

I am a tunze fan. Noiseless. Vortech's are too noisy for me.

get a tunze return pump, the silence 1073.090 i think it is.. then you will have the benefit of the whole tank (sump and display) being kept going as these pumps can be run off of a battery.. with the use of an adapter.

    excellent lifespan and very reliable..

    BMW or Mercedes?

VorTech is very nice. Easier to clean. Takes up less space in the tank. But cannot be directed into any direction except straight forward. Excellent flow, and nice settings including master and slave, food mode, sleep mode etc. But I cannot understand why it should loose the time to go to sleep mode when the power goes out. Yip, not using the battery backup solution. It does remember the other settings at least.

Tunze, internal pumps, more wires into the tank. Less noise due to pump motor also inside the water. More heat transfer. More to clean due to being more inside the tank and more light falls on them.

End of the day, its your choice.

I agree with Les, this would solve serveral issue all with one pump.
