So, my system is running for some time now. I've gone through the gha outbreak, and have the red slime algae almost under control. I've added a filter sock, which will help with the detritus in the sump. So now I'm going to start dosing vinegar.

So my question, I have a total system volume of about 200 l. How much vinegar and iodine should I be dosing? I was thinking of about 5ml per day on the vinegar for the 1st week, and then reducing to about 3 ml, then to 2 ml per day. No idea on the Iodine dosing... I need to dose for my shrimps and corals, seeing as it helps for molting and the polyp extensions and colouration of the corals.

Never dose anything you can't measure for, get an iodine test kit and go from there, or have your water tested.

@Reaper there is a vinegar dosing chart ill see if i can find it, but you need to build it up slowly not start with huge amounts and wean it off, you will end up with a bacteria bloom.

as for the iodine, yes it helps with shrimp moulting, but has more to do with colour in corals (pinks) than polyp extension. you could probably safely does 5ml per week if its something like brightwells

    Thanks @butcherman

Will have a look at the test kits and iodine supplements at lfs tomorrow.

Wrt the vinegar, I read on a different forum they recommended to start high, then reduce... confused lol. Please see if you can find the chart, that will help a lot

starting high will shock the system imo. remeber you always wanna do things slowly in a reef tank

Vinegar is great for controlling nutrients, but it is a system that is hard work. The best way is to do it via a doser and you need to test your nutrients often. You need to keep in mind that when you are away, who will dose the vinegar for you, if you are doing it manually. Vinegar is best dosed gradually over the whole day in small doses as this will make sure you don't have one large dose that increases bacteria. It also takes time. I dosed vinegar for many years, and it does work, cheap and easy form of carbon dosing, if you do it correctly.

as for iodine, its not worth getting a test kit for, i find them PITA, get a test from a lfs, then dose weekly.
i have used seachem iodine , never tested and no issues in years. never overdose

That's some good articles @dallasg... thanx for sharing. As far as I can see, there's no concrete proof that iodine is a necessity in the aquarium, but it does give me the idea that it actually does help. I'm definitely giving it a trial and see what difference it will make to my critters.

    lack of iodine

    after adding iodine

also worth noting this system had red macro algea that striped the iodine out the water. but is shows how corals can bleach due to lack of iodine

Dammit, that's some turn for the better hey!

Now leave me alone, I wanna add matrix

Oh btw, on the subject, how should I add the matrix? Do I put it in a filter sock or something? Was thinking of just adding a pump to get water flowing right through the bottle it comes in... would that work?

Jip jip. Just asking, do I need to rinse the matrix first?

    cool
you can even add a large airstone to create an air uplift

drill 4 holes on the bottom of the container, and a few in the lid, place the airstone in then fill with matrix.
the water will be drawn in bottom to top and aerated
