    Hi All,

Been a long time since posting here.
Kept fresh water since I was a kid, started my first marine tank in 2003ish, had no sump or skimmer. Ran for about 6 months but packed it up and decided that I would only return to marine when I had the time and money to do it properly. Looked like this.

Thought that time had arrived in 2008ish but shortly after found out that my wife was preggers, so decided again to leave it.

Fast-forward another 6 years and this time, really, this time I'm getting/got:thumbup: my tank up again.

Same tank as years before, drilled and overflow box made, took another old 60cm tank and divided it up for the sump. My brother and I made the stand, way back in '08.

Had to sand and treat the stand after rusting for 6 years, cleaned everything up got it all ready.

    Kit list:
    90cm standard daro DT (90*35*35)
60cm standard daro as sump (60*35*35)
    +- 160L total volume
    Reeftek TS2 Skimmer
150W 10k MH (10 years old and still works, haha)
    SICCE 950l/h Return pump
    ViaAqua PH 750l/h
    SEIO Prop 320
    2x 150W heaters

    1st pic after a month.
2nd pic after another month (2 months since start)
    3rd pic sump shot

Got a DIY LED project under way as well.
Just waiting on my order from rapidled.com to arrive.

4 x Royal Blue Moonlight LED
    10 x CREE XT-E Royal Blue LED
    10 x CREE XP-G2 5W Cool White LED
    3 x Mean Well LDD-1000HW dimmable driver
1 x Coralux Storm LED Controller

Scored these heat-sinks and a PSU from my work. (Got 100's of these heat-sinks if anyone is interested)
Monster PSU, could light up the whole of Centurion with LED's and this PSU.
    1600W
    50V
    20A

    Overkill? Nah!

    They measure (W)14cm x (L)48cm

    Free for frags
Otherwise was thinking of R300 each.

Hehe, yeah, no optics on the LEDs to focus the light so they shine out at 180 all around, basically. And the white walls reflect all that light.

The tanks hood will do the job of keeping the light off the walls and out my eyes :p
The hood is still under construction for now, so I've made a temporary arrangement with duck tape and towels

    Vetrix's Reef v2.0 RC

Okay so, tanks been humming along for 3 months more or less. All good.
The other day SWAMBO said that we should have gone bigger, I could not believe my ears. Muttered "I told you so" under my breath. :whistling:

Anyhow, so, now, with permission, I started converting a old 1.25m x 50cm x 50cm freshwater tank I've had for years and years laying in the garden shed. It had cracked three times on us in the past and thats why it had been banished to the shed.

Decided I will strip off all the old bracing and redo it with euro bracing top and bottom.
    Drilled a 32mm hole and installed a C2C overflow.

Basically the whole current DT will become the DBS/Fuge and the current sump will stay the sump.

The new tank will just plug into the existing system.
There is a cupboard next to the tank, with SWAMBOs permission again I stripped out all the shelves and will be making it my fish cupboard.

The only things to be seen outside the cupboard will be the new DT and some plumbing, that's it.

    PICS!!!!

1st = Drilled and Blukhead in place
    2nd = C2C overflow in and curing
    3rd = C2C overflow in and curing 2
    4th = C2C
5th = Last euro braces in

Hopefully a fresh water test tonight.

So, on the weekend of the 14th June I moved the modified tank into place and filled her up.

She had been running in the lapa for 4 days with fresh water and I was happy she was ready.

5 hours after I had moved over all the livestock, rocks and sand I heard a "CraCk", was still standing there admiring my work. So I looked over the tank and saw a crack on one of the braces. 5 seconds later the whole front panel cracked right down from the brace to the bottom.

Spilling 250 odd litres of salt water all over the carpet. My wife and I rushed to save as much water as possible. Luckily it was just enough to fill the old tank and move everything back again.

DISASTERS are not cool, luckily I only lost a cleaner shrimp and only because we could not find him on the room floor that became an ocean. Only found him hours later behind a desk. We had a nice memorial service for him. It was touching.

It all happened so fast I didn't even have a pic of what it looked like filled.

More of the story to follow later, yes, yes, with pics :p

    Not nice.
Seems you need to add a center brace when you rebuild the tank.
And while at it, add braces along both ends as well.

Sorry to hear. Sounds like a real mess but well done with the search and rescue!

How thick was the glass? For my own enlightenment and education not to point fingers.

Had braces all along the inside bottom and top.

Turns out I had a pic of the fresh water test.
Ran for 4 days in the lapa, was not even levelled.

Bought this tank about um... 10 years ago?
Was bought with 5mm glass, waaay to thin I know, that's why I went overboard with braces. Guess a centre brace would have helped.

No rebuild again, this was the fourth time this tank cracked on me, so it's been kicked to the curb.
