Hi Peeps

I thought I would kick start this. Please give some input if you have.

Based on the above Table done by Randy Holmes-Farley of what the acceptable levels in our tanks should be.

Tank Size = 500lts for the below formulas

Alkalinity
Current Dkh 7
Increase Dkh 8
Bi-Carb = 3 tsp
pH affect = Somewhat lower
Note: Disolve 3 tsp of Bi-Carb with 1ltr RO water & Pour slowly in high flow area or sump wait 24 Hrs before testing again.

Calcium - to increase or maintain a 20 PPM per day use
Current = 380 PPM
Required = 400 PPM
Calcium Chloride = 7 tsp
pH affect = Minimal
Disolve 7 tsp of Calcium Chloride with 1ltr RO water & Pour slowly in high flow area or sump wait 24 Hrs before testing again.

Magnesium - to increase or maintain a 20 PPM per day use
Current = 1260 PPM
Required = 1280 PPM
Epson Salts = 20 tsp
pH affect = Minimal
Disolve 20 tsp of Epson Salts with 2ltr RO water & Pour slowly in high flow area or sump wait 24 Hrs before testing again.

Epson Salts should not be used alone as a Magnesium Buffer please see the following post. http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-02/rhf/index.php#16

I hope this give one an idea of where one can start with dosing & what one could consider "Safe"

Happy Reefing

@vatso
Does one tsp equal 5 grams?

No that's 5ml, ml to gram doesn't work, except for sugar :)

Ok. That's a problem. The CaCl granules differ in size. 5ml large granules won't be the same amount as 5ml fine powder. Where as 5g is 5g every time.

I dosed 50g of CaCl to tonight. I will measure tomorrow night and give a rough guideline of how many grams will increase a 100 liters by 20 ppm.

So after 24 hrs my Ca has gone from 340 to 440 in a 250 liter tank with 50g of CaCl.

So 10g CaCl increased Ca by 20ppm in 250 liters.

So 4g will increase 100 liters by 20 ppm.

I will recheck the Ca tomorrow as 24 hrs may not have been enough to equally distribute the new Ca addition.

Guys if you dosing large quantities please note
Do not raise more than this per day to get to a target level, consumption is a different story
Ca - 20ppm
Mg - 10ppm
Alk - 1kdH

Agreed. I miscalculated completely. I will check Ca again tonight to see total raise in Ca.

Thanks

So my calcium is still the same. Maybe 10 ppm lower at 430 so I'm going to stick with the above calculations for CaCl bought from Protea Chemicals.

I have previously calculated their MgCl to raise my tank water Mg by 1ppm for every 1 gram.

I will post when I have results for Sodium Carbonate. (Baked sodium bicarbonate)

There are lots of threads with similar calculations and reef calculators but I don't know what the concentrations (or purity) are of the protea products so I'm trying some DIY calculations.

Lots of people use these products from protea so there is some suggestion that it's safe. No facts though.

@Bendor I've been using pharm grade products from protea chem for sometime and I'm quite happy with them.
My initial problem was getting my stock solution ratio. But once that was sought the rest was fairly simple.
My stock solution consist of 50grams chemicals to one liter ro. This disolves the chemicals fully. Any more chemical and a risidue usually remains.

I mixed 50g CaCl in 2 liters RO. Was still planning to do max weight dilution. Thanks a lot for the advice!
