I would like to run a UV sterilizer on my 1300L reef aquarium.

In your opinions, which is the best brand, most effective UV sterilizer?

Also i understand that there is a difference btw a clarifier and a sterilizer?

Bulb intensity/wattage and is quart necessary?

    Thanks guys...

Following this as I am also thinking of running UV (although I have been against this in principle !)

55w would be the best even better 2x 55w uv ster

est brand on the market would be phillips..otherwise the more local on would also work well.....ultra zap

Anyone know how long the bulbs last and what they cost to replace?

Anyone else had favourable results from using a UV sterilizer?

Marlin I've always been of the opinion that it will also kill benifitial bacteria. Having done a LOT of research when planning mny new setup, I do think there is a place for it if run CORRECTLY !

    Also heard that....

However this is my reasoning.... if needed ...correct me please.

I read the other thread that discussed white spot and UV sterilizers.
I understand that it isnt going to actually treat the infected fish, however i do believe it can help.

I have witnessed the results of the treatment of some tangs (incl 2 regals and 2 powder blues) at NAAC with an Aqua Medic UV sterilizer and it seems to have really worked! Firstly not allowing the white spot to become more severe and at present all the above listed tangs are free of WS and all originally had been infected.

I also understand that if the fish is eating its a good sign and one should just nurse it till the WS is gone. I have had an issue whith white spot before and found that removing the fish to a hospital tank just stessed it out more and would make the WS spread more.

So my thinking is this... whenever introducing new fish (especially Surgeons), what if i applied the UV sterilizer in the initial week of introducing the fish, when its the most likely time for it to stress and be infected and once it seems settled and healthy i could wean the system off the UV again and only use it if necessary?

Not sure if I would get UV just for this purpose, I have a "tang tank" and had some whitespot in the beginning but now nothing...not even after the big move.

    Very valid point david

If a R1'500 or R2'000 UV sterilizer can help "contain" or "treat" white spot on a few R1'000 tangs... i think it could be considered worthwhile.

Would like to hear some more opinions on this.

If you see the Tangs at NAAC (lfs) condition and you ask their store supervisor his reasoning u'll see what i mean.

These are Regals and Powders which are super prone to WS its not like they are in a super matured tank at all. All of them have absolutely no sign of WS. Well at least for the last 3 weeks. As I understand this specifically happened once the UV sterilizer was applied.

The other question here would most likely be the effect of using UV on a Reef system, possible adverse effects, etc.

Marlin hear what you are saying..wrt containing WS, I have however also read on our wonderfull
internet (cant believe everything) about cases where WS appeared AFTER adding UV \

Shot for your input ......guys......Lanzo and Frans.
Do you guys have any recommendations for brands of reliable units?
The aqua medic one is bit expensive for me and i was hoping to find a quality one that was a bit less expensive?

My TAB on new equipment is running a little high at the moment....haha

Otherwise any names soft hearted/lenient bank managers would also help:lol:

Also would you advise using a UV sterilizer from the start or only after the tank is mature?
