    Hello,
I've been planning on using caribsea's base rock as it is cheaper than LR, but is this only meant to be a basis for LR i.e. some people use pvc pipe and atach LR to the pvc, so is base rock used in similar way to just support the LR or do I use it as proper rock for scaping as well?

Absolutely. I would suggest rather using base rock for basis of scaping, rather than PVC, as base rock eventually becomes "alive" where PVC doesn't.

What I do suggest is to get the smallest drill bit your your drill can handle, and just drill it full of holes, in order to help pods live in it etc.

In the beginning, you will see the base rock makes your tank scaping look white and brilliant, but later it will be covered with algae etc, and stuff will even grow from it.

Go with base rock if you dont have the money for LR only. ;)

    Hope this makes sense.

my tank was 90% base rock and 10% live and now you cant tell the difference, pack it as though you would the LR.. the nice thing about using "dead" rock is that there is no pressure to pack it in a hurry and fill the tank immediatley.. you can take time to arange your scaping to accomodate for caves etc.. then add a few kg of LR to seed it..

with the correct minipulation of light cycles 9to avoid algae blooms) and the correct supplements it will become encrusted with corraline in 6 or so months..

the rock as mentioned will become beneficial but pvc piping wont..

in smaller tanks it may be esential to have the correct ratio of rock in respect to water volume taking care no to displace too much water and this is where PVc sructures become useful..

I like this forum, a lot.
Thx for the response, I feel much more at ease with going with BR and only few pieces of LR than before.
@Jaco: Thx, your awnser is spot on what I was looking for.
@Lanzo: The first pic looks great, second one looks like piece of salt:), and yes I know you sell the stuff thats why I asked the question, want to get some.
@Annoying: Think pvc works when you want to do something wierd/difficult, otherwise it seems BR is good to go.
@Leslie: Would like to know more about the lighting cycle you talk about....and the suppl
@Keyaam: Check on Dorry's site, not sure what it is going for currently

My idea is to get the BR and do some basic scaping and put my substrate in and only then get an RO unit and fill the tank and at that time add LR.
