I have a 1200lph cannister filter from my Discus days. I currently do not have any mechanical filtration - lots of stuff floating in the water column. Could I:

1) Use the cannister for mechanical filtration and clean it once a week.
2) In addition use it as a phosphate reactor

Total system volume around 700l

1) yes
2) yes - just be careful of flow through it and make sure the media cant get out.

You could also run carbon in it.

Ok thanks - which media could I use? I have read quite a few threads which mentions that flow through the media should not be too fast or too slow?

You can use any phosphate media but id recommend using one of the GFO ones over the aluminium based media, it just works a whole lot better. If the flow is too fast the media tends to breakdown, too slow and it clumps. Youll have to run the media in a filter bag or place it between layers of filter matting.
