Tripneustes gratilla, Short-spined urchin. Not really a good species IME.

Why? I have one, does a brilliant job, might knock over rocks, so make sure they are stuck down.

They often munch softies and they're quite a bit stronger than some other species. I prefer oval urchins (Echinometra).

I have a fair amount GHA in my tank (due to the high temperatures) - would it consume the algae first or will its diet be my softies (Kenya tree)?

    Probably the GHA first.

The urchin? I use tons of nori sheets (have six tangs), (no garlic ones), and also new era sea weed pellet, the one that you stick on the glass, the urchins love it, always have one or two eating from here at one time. Fish, mostly frozen and every two days, pellets or flakes.
