Hi there I was wondering if someone has some advice on this.....

I installed a UPS on my system over the weekend to run the 85w return and 3 8w powerheads in case of a power outage

It is a 1400va UPS so it is supposed to carry the load easily.taking the wattage rating of the UPS will be at about 60% of the VA rating.

Anyways what happens when I shut all power off is that the bloody UPS kicks in and it seems that the pumps now spin backwards sucking water from display to sump.

This does not make sense beacuse its AC and polarity should not make a difference.

Has this anything to do with the sine wave output of the UPS or what can the cause be?????

Any sugestions as to what to do would be greatly appreciated

@Philip.Cloete, When using a ups it must be a pure sinwave or modified sinwave on certain pumps. I know the Atman return pump only work on a pure sinewave where the more exspensive pump like water blaster runs on the modified sinwave @Quintin will be able to tell you more....

Cant help you on the reverse startup issue.

You could potentially use the UPS. But you will need to replace the batteries with a deep cycle battery that has a lot more capacity and get an external charger as the charger inside the UPS will not be able to recharge a 100AH battery fast enough. So basically you will only be able to use the UPS as the inverter component.

If you dont want to change to a deep cycle battery and external charger then you will not get decent backup time. To calculate what you will get out of your current unit you will need to open it up and check the AH ratings of the battery.

Philip - I have a ReefOcto 3000 pump for a return pump (65 watt), and mine is connected to a 650VA UPS (for now). This works perfectly well for me. I ONLY have the return pump on the UPS though. I have a PC UPS (probably modified sinewave - not 100% sure).
