Sumps are generally used for equipment like skimmers, heaters, carbon, phosphate reactors, bio pellets reactors, macro algae, ozone controllers etc. A sump keeps all the ugly things out of the display tank. You could also use a DSB if you wanted but they seem to be getting less popular with the newer methods of nitrate removal like pellets and nopox etc.

No, you do not need to. Can only have hardware in there. Or other chemical filtration, or biological (eg. live rock) The choice is yours.

Some people choose to set up part of their sump as refugium.

    But nothing is a MUST.

Oky after some advice I decided on a dsb with some macro algae growing in the sump. What is a refugium?

A refugium is a place where you can place problem fish or unwanted snails or crabs etc.

Also used as growing spot for macro algae or frags struggling in dt.
On the dsb, what is the size of your sump compartment anailable for the dsb and the size of your tank?

My tank is a 400 liter tank with a
100 liter sump. The space for the dsb in 20cm* 30cm and I want to make my sandbed 15cm deep...?

I may stand corrected, but that may be a bit small for a DSB to be effective. @RiaanP may be able to give better guidance of dsb vs tank size ratio.

yip, that is a bit too small for an effective DSB.
Alternatives would be Seachem Matrix or MarinePure Bio filter material

But if your sump is already a default 3 chamber setup, and the middle section is a over instead of up down flow, then I would rather place the Matrix or MarinePure in a plastic basket. At least you can lift and shake the basket once in a while to get rid of detritus.

    nope.

It works 1L Matrix for every 400L system volume.
