    Hi everyone.

I need the help of the pro's. I bought a "black sureonfish" from my LFS and would like to know if anyone can come up with a scientific name?

All i seem to find that are similar online via all the websites are Acanthurus auranticavus(Not likely as they are form Australia) or Acanthurus mata.

Everything I read it is def still a juvenile so I dont know what colour changes will be shown later. It is black when hiding but it shows yellow grey with fine lines everywhere most of the time.

The yellow in the fins and behind the eyes are not very visible. I am just using a camera phone so bare with me.

    Thoughts?

    Could also be A. Blochii

Why not ask the LFS for the name, it would/should be on their import list

Maybe just a hybrid, suppose you will need it to grow out to get a proper answer.

My first guess was also a Kole tang.

This one seems to be still very small and juvenile. Coloration might change as it grows.

Can you ask them on what shipment it came? Might narrow down the options if you know more or less where it came from. My first impression is that it is a Mata tang, but guess it could also be Acanthurus nigroris, given that the "nigro" part in scientific name implies "black", so a good chance it might be marked as a black surgeon fish by wholesalers.

I think Ctenochaetus bristetooth tangs don't have rounded dorsal or anal fins and juveniles have a much sharper/angular mouth, so definitely think it is Acanthurus. Does it eat off the rocks? Or swims in mid water most of the time? I think mata tangs are plankton feeders and not really algae eaters from what I remember, so should have a more rounded mouth like yours.

    Hi everyone,

After consulting with various people and guides we cam to the conclusion that it is in fact a Mata Tang. Has been sold and happy in his new 3000l tank.
