After about 6 years in storage I unboxed an brand new, original Reef Octopus DNW-200-6540 (not the new b type) recirculating skimmer over the weekend. (@Ridwaan, think I bought it from you years ago).

Felt a bit like making history! Beautiful machine, but is it any still any good? Should I keep it or is the new ones so much better?

Is there any mods I can do to it that will make a big difference.

For starters, the new needle wheel impellers looks very different and I think I should replace the ball valve with a gate valve?

Also will have to cut a part of the stand-pipe off as it does not fit in, even with a 1m stand.

Are you using it with this original pump? Not reading great things about it. See that you can get a new needle wheel for it (see pick) and there is a Bubble Blaster conversion kit available for the skimmer.

Stupid question, but do you/can you use a needle wheel impeller pump for the feed pump as well?

Think it should go in the horizontal bit, and the shorter one here. If the water level rises above the collector cup level it will flood in any case.

I see the new (b) ones comes with a gate valve and a silencer cap on the stand pipe (after the gate valve).

Is it worth considering? Gate valve will definitely help with fine tuning water level and flow, not sure how much the silencing endcap will do?

Pls keep it, may need spares in the future. PS, no idea who "that guy bit" is?

Fell in love with them when the came out, had to get one, pitty I did not have the tank to go with it.

Great skimmer, I used one for a while.

    A mod:
Drill out the venturi with a 7mm drill bit.
This is a well documented mod for this skimmer.

    A caution:
The stock ball valve loves to leak.

    This is the pinwheel impellor....
Does make difference but I have found the mesh wheel mod on this skimmer makes it skim like a beast...

or you could change the pump to a Blaster 3000 pump...then u will have serious skimming power..
