That will work. Only problem is issues in main tank will spread to sub tank.
Other than that, it will work.

    Hi robert,

This setup does work but IMHO not for what you are planning, seahorses are quite specialised and sensitive, depending on what you are keeping in your main DT it might be better keeping them seperate.

Otherwise as riaan said this type of setup does work , I used it personally

Nothing stopping you from setting up the nano as a stand alone system, as Frans pointed out, CR Ponies are very specific in their own right and exposing them to the water from the main tank may not be so good. Then you can keep exactly what you want in the Nano and don't have to change species as it appears you were begining to think about...;)

its Gwen that has got this into her head , she wants a tank too but only a 2ft i thought it might be easier to go with the same sump , on the otherhand do i want to go with somthing that is so specialized im thinking of doing somthing small just not sure, i will have to see what she wants to do

I am doing almost the same thing but not opting for sea horses. Rather local fish for ID and study.

It's nice to have a seperate system to isolate issues when there is an emergency, like something dies without you know it and then you need to move livestock asap to a safer enviroment.

Very possible buddy - check my thread out - total of 7 tanks were connected to one sump then split it to 2 sumps and converted 1 tank to a stand alone as a quarantine/hospital tank - Just make sure your plumbing can individually isolate tanks off from one another..... Now starting to plan something bigger ... thats the problem in marines .... system is never big enough - I want to up my water volume from about 2000Litres to about maybe 5000 litres in total ....

I plan to add 2 x 1000litre utility bins as remote dsb and refugium and live rock holding facilities and then build a concrete tank maybe about 2000litres with granite breakfast counter top and add my 6 foot at an odd angle to "split" an open plan lounge/kitchen
