I'll be adopting one of these guys as part of my tank buy, and have been doing some reading up. Apparently these okes become large in the ocean (24", that's two feet!) and that they have an appetite for inverts like shrimp and hermits when they start getting bigger. Because of this, they are not considered reef safe in the long term.

Since I love creepy crawlies (I find them more interesting than fish), what do I do? I'll be catching him this weekend during the tank move, do I find a new home for him now or leave it for now and see how it goes?

How big is your tank? Most coris wrasses love their inverts. If they can get their mouths around an invert they will chomp it

They do get huge, how big is he at the moment? You might be stuck with a conundrum here, do I keep it until he gets bigger, and then risk the chance no-one wants him, or maybe sell it now. May be wild on pets or another LFS will buy him from you or exchange for other stock. I personally would sell him now, while he is still pretty and small. Does your new tank have any inverts now?

Yes, it's got some hermits (including my favourite, that big blue-legged guy you saw) and some snails. There's also a skunk cleaner shrimp (I think it's called, red/yellow/white ones with long white feelers). The shrimp is big though, so no worries there for the time being.

The tank is 1000x600x600. Wrasse is about 5-6 inches.

Good chance it'll whack your hermits at the first chance it gets. Tank is waaaaaaay too small for it too.

If you dont want it, rather get rid of it now. fish can be hard to catch later in an established tank.

Oh, I do want it. It's gorgeous. I just don't want any assassinations in my tank!

Then youll have to abandon the idea of keeping hemits and shrimps. As Lord Blackadder says, youll also have to start thinking about upgrading to a bigger tank.
