    Hi all,

I learnt the hard way that Tunze ATU pumps are not self priming.
Ie even with the atu chamber full, if you don't prime the pump it will still burn out regardless of being fully submerged.

A little silly if you ask me considering a cheap R400 atu can do this but an expensive Tunze unit cannot.

Anyway, this is not covered by the Tunze warranty and Tunze want R400 for a replacement 12v pump which I think is crazy expensive.

Does anyone know where I can buy a similar pump at a reasonable price?
Preferably a pump that actually self primes!
I am happy to accept that using a non Tunze pump with void the warranty.

yes, or any caravan place. It is RO water, so any pump they use in the caravans will work. Just stay away those with open copper shafts or impellers.

    I don't understand...
I have a Tunze ATO and if my R.O Reservoir is empty and the pump starts, it shuts the pump down until I refill the ATO reservoir...Never had that problem...I will keep an eye on it just incase...

I find the Tunze ATO pump very loud when it switches on...That's the only problem I have...

All i know that once my reservoir was low, but not below the pump, and when i looked at my return it was also low so assumed it was burnt, added the new pump, toped up water and all was fine. If im not mistaken i think this is one of the safety features on the pump, maybe @George or @Anita can assist.

Same here....Reason for this is when it runs dry and you refill R.O reservoir, there is air trapped in the pump...So by shaking the pump a bit releases the air and its starts to pump as normal...

I turn the pump upside down & shake it about to get the air out but lately I've found my pump jittering & not pumpung but once I unplug it & put it back in then it work again... Was a fustrating week & the unit is still new...

Mine pump works like a charm, never need to shake it or anything. Though noise when the pump is running is super irritating :whistling:

All Tunze osmoregulators come with comprehensive instructions, on page 37 it tells you how to initially prime & remove trapped air bubbles after a dry run.
For those who don't want to replace a Tunze pump feel free to go to a camping, caravan shop and buy a 12 volt pump and connect it the same way.
Last weekend I visited someone who had one running for 15 years before it packed up.
Please read your instructions it usually saves you a lot of money in the end.
    Happy reefing George

As far as I'm concerned the pump is the only pitfall to an otherwise fantastic device.
The shaking or turning upside down in effect is priming the pump.

I have spoken to Anita and George prior to posting here, all info I posted is accurate.

My pump burnt out after my atu chamber was left to run dry, the pump must have lost it's primed state as when filled with water you could hear it running but no water was being pumped.
    As I said lesson learnt.
Just be very aware of it cos they burn out real fast

For those who already thrown the instructions away this page 37 in the manual.
You can also go to TUNZE Hi-Tech Aquarium Ecology and view any Tunze equipment manual you desire.

    Power and water connections
    of the metering pump
Use a terminal to connect the cables (1) of the
metering pump and the controller (2). It is immaterial
which cable is connected on the right or left of the
    terminal.
Push the hose (3) on to the neck of the metering
pump right up to stop; in doing so avoid heights of
over 2m (78.7 in.) (maximum pumping heat of the
metering pump at 11V is 2.5m (98.4 in.).
Plase the metering pump into the storage container
vertically (4); lay the hose without kinks to ensure
    good ventilation and delivery.
Use a clamp (5) to attach the hose to the holder and
    the side of the basin.
Do not operate the pump (4) without water; short
air intake is harmful. After dry run and subsequent
filling, shake the pump to remove the air.
Plug the power supply unit (6) to the controller.
    l’aspiration d’air n’ayant cependant aucune
importance. Lors d’un nouveau remplissage du
réservoir, agitez la pompe pour en évacuer l’air.
Raccordez l’alimentation secteur (6) sur le
    Controller.
