Is it a tube worm or a tube anemone?

Hi jodie welcome to masa how long was the bubble tip in the tank before you figured it was dead.. the can release toxins when the die and in a 20l it compounds the problem.. what else have you got in the tank

    How did the anemone die?
Tube anemones and bubble tips together in that size tank is not a good idea.Anemones need mature stable systems, something hard to achieve in a 20l tank.
    What are your tank parameters?

i had a bubble tip die on me once... wasn't pretty. they release a very powerful toxin when they die and that can kill everything in the tank except the clown fish. did you do a water change. if not i sugets a big one maybe even 50%. add carbon if you can to help remove the toxins left in the water. it is possible that the tube anemone and the bubble tip were fighting and the tube anemone won. when my bubble tip died the water was very cloudy and had a distinctive smell of something terribly wrong.

how long have you had the tank for.

As soon as I saw there was something wrong with the bubble tip anenome I left it out for a bit and then took it out and it released a little bit of toxins but the tank is clear and everything else seems fine. I have 3crabs, 2 hermit crabs, 2 clown fish, 2 worm anenomes and a tube worm as well as 2 shrimp and a polyp

i would still do a water change.. in such a small system. just to be safe. probably the tube anemone has retreated to protect itself from the dead bubble tip toxins

In your system you have very little water volume so if anything was released by the anenome it will not be about to be dilute enough to be out of high levels.

My tube anenome is allergic to bright light and receded during the day. I then put him in a cave and he started extending more frequently. It also took him a few days to burrow into the PVC pipe full of sand that I had placed him in (when I bought him, he did not have a tube). I have also found that he evacuates his home when the flow is too strong (which happens each time my Sun Sun comes loose).

you did well by removing the dead anemone fast. when mine died i was very inexperienced and thought that if i just left it in the tank maybe it will get better (i didnt belive it was dead) big mistake obviously that almost put me off the reef hobby

Waterchange & a bag of activated carbon...
Bubbletip anemones can ruin such a small tank if they die!
Start off with a large (25-40% of total volume) waterchange with GOOD quality water (preferably not mixed by a petstore) & at the same temperature & salinity as your tank's water!

These answers are base on your aquarium being 20 liters

    1) an anemone is not for the faint harted in such a small tank
    2) anemone's are agressive and will fight for is own space.(chemical warfare)
    3) two different species of anemone in such a small tank is deffinately not reccomended. Not even in four or five times the volume.
    4) who sold you the anenome's and do they know your tank (dont post this answer here please PM me )
    5) dont do more than 30% water change at a time but this can be repeated daily for two or three days
6 Add some good quality activated carbon this will help draw out the toxins and ammonia
    7) by all means do not turn off your light this will cause ph drop now and there is most likely ammonia in your water if the PH drops as it does when you turn your lights off this will become the more toxic ammonium and you will wake up with some smelly soup.

All the best i hope you come right.

P.S the store you bought it from should have known better. ( The biggest problem being in retail)
