    hey trev,'
in your thread about MAC quality fish you said that you managed to get a number of purple tangs, and i think you kept two to be introduced into your system, but i am challenging my own memory here i was wondering how those purple tangs you have were getting on. i know you said a mate was taking two and you were keeping two and in recent days there has been lots of livley debate about the aggresiveness of purple tangs when placed together so could you update us how those fish are doing?

id be careful of introducing those fish into a display tank together as regardless of how healthy they are (or often due to increased health) as a pair of purples is likley to fight to the detriment of one. a mac guarentee wont help them if they do fight so keep an eye on them closely and keep us updated will ya.

Sharing a recent experience as I feel this is the right forum for it:

Introduced 2 Powder Blue Tangs in my 1200L reef tank together with 5 other tangs, some larger some smaller, about 7 months ago. They niggled with each other for the first week and then seemed to be fine. Thereafter I was quite impressed with my achievement of keeping two healthy PB tangs together in one tank. I did notice that every time I added another fish into the tank (any species) that the one smaller PB would follow/chase the other around the tank for the next 24 hours and then settle again (territory dispute i guess).

3 Weeks ago harmony changed to hell! The larger one that had always seemed to be more passive and always retreat if ever there was a dispute seemed to crack! As if he had matured and now had enough, turned on the slightly smaller one and harrassed him to near death. I caught the smaller in the nick of time and managed to save him in my sump after which I returned him to my LFS.

Point is...IMO... unless you lucky or you have a really large system..... at some stage things can turn ugly.

I have heard of some success with 3 same specie tangs in one tank...not sure if the uneven number helps?

actually fellas i am very intrested in this qustion, im not just stiring for the sake of it. i have a 375 magnun pointed at my head already so i dont really want to rile viper up any more than i have:p

but ive read alot about purples and i am yet to find anywhere that they are succesful in a group, although dropzonenoob may have a chance at some semblance of peace in his tank with them as a group.

my thoughts go along the lines that if a pair of tangs (in the case of trev's) are taken from a quarentine system without structure and placed into a DT with structure they can use for territory then the more dominant of the two will hammer the other one, and knives will come out early on, regardless of how healthy the tangs are. Perhaps a pair of purples will get along for a while, but from what ive read things will change over time.

however in group and a large tank i think the dominant tang may try assert themself on all three other purples equaly and thus none are hammered.

i may be totally wrong but id like to hear trev's experiences:)

but while u guys are making popcorn, fetch me a beer will ya

    Excellent question Crispy !!

I too am interested in this answer... perhaps the key is not to create direct conflict i.e. never two of one species ? either 1 or more than 2 ????

    Tagging along here
