We are hitting prime aquarium show season here with SuperZoo wrapping last week, MACNA right around the corner, and followed by Reefapalooza in October. We figured it was prime time to do a quick recap of the top 5 stories we covered from Aquarama 2013 in Singapore.

There were plenty of intriguing stories and it was tough to point to our top five. Having a writer on the ground for the second time gave us an unprecedented look at the aquarium hobby in Southeast Asia. Some of the products we see may never hit the US shores but there are plenty of products that we see soon after making their debut at Aquarama.

Make sure you take a look at the complete Aquarama photo gallery at the the end of the post. Without furthur ado, here are the top 5 Aquarama 2013 stories we covered at Aquarama.

Skimz Oval Protein Skimmer design cuts footprint by nearly 25%

This idea is so simple and logical, we have to wonder why someone didn’t come up with it sooner. This is a great way to utilize the benefits of cone skimmers in a space-saving design. We have been impressed with what Skimz has come up with over the years and this company is one of the reasons we look forward to Aquarama.

Omega Sea Premium Reef & Marine Salt produce more saltwater with less mix

We were a bit surprised to see a salt from the company better known for its quality fish foods but what caught our attention the most –*a salt mix which yields 20% more seawater. More saltwater from less mix? You got our attention and we look forward to try this salt mix out.

SeaTest Control System is a game changer for fish tank water testing

The SeaTest Control System from Aquarium Systems France is an extremely novel testing device blending the best of the old and the new. A simple premise but sophisticated device which is supported by the familiar drop testing method we all know and love/hate. Will it take over the testing world? We aren’t sure but it is a new way to attack an old problem and a blessing for those of us that aren’t so optically gifted.

Sicce Shark ADV Filter uses magnetic coupling to make maintenance a breeze

You’re probably wondering how a simple internal filter made our list but Sicce really did come up with something innovative and useful for aquarists of any level. We’ve all struggled with cleaning and putting these back together before and this new version really makes it a one-handed task.*The Shark ADV from Sicce uses a magnetic coupler to hold the filtration chamber. Simple and handy for a quarantine of smaller aquarium.

H&H Kraken dosing pump will turn heads with its looks and low price

If the appearance of the H&H Kraken 4-channel doser was meant to grab our attention with its swank outline and carbon fiber finish well it worked. As we mature in the hobby, we realize our behind the scenes mechanics don’t need to be ugly and functional. This would make any system look top-notch and the price might even be more impressive. If we understood the company correctly, these might be coming in around $250. A lot of bang for your buck.
