The export of live rock originating from Tonga has ceased, and unfortunately there will no longer be Tonga Branch Rock, Tonga Slab Rock

i am glad they finally clamping down on the natural stuff, and forcing the aqua-cultured LR to be made and sold.

Here are some thoughts on Live rock.

    1) Live rock is a sustainable source. The harvesting of LR for the aquarium trade in minimal. The oceans and corals will and do produce LR all the time.

    2) Bio rock comes from other calcium deposits. Now the blasting in quarries of thousands of years of geographical sites to extract a non sustainable calcium/substance source is more damaging to the environment. It can never be replaced.

So IMO the man made Bio Rock from clay, calcium carbonate etc should be baned before the extraction of LR from the ocean for the aquarium trade.

    Other thoughts????

How long would you estimate does it take for about 100Kg of LR to be produced?

I will leave that for your homework and estimation. As i will. How long does it take to replace the resources used to make Bio rock?

i will disagree and agree, both forms have pros and cons, what the problem is, is mis-management. yes LR from the oceans might be minimal, but its the mis-management of collection and methods that leads to the raping of the oceans.

mining has the same effect i will agree,

@ziyaadb - 100kg is not even worth doing, i have been to LR farms in Florida and we talking tons and tons over weeks to 5yrs depending on the quality you want, environment etc
