Personally i would run the full filtration including skimmer, dont think it makes that much difference in the long run.

i was thinking maybe using the skimmer will reduce the risk of algae build up during cycling?

Tremayn it would also depend on the Liverock that you are using, If u are using uncured fresly picked from the ocean live rock then you gota skim or do big water changes because of the die off. My skimmer was just wasting electricity when i was cycling my tank because there was no die off and no bioload.

It will help in reducing algae, chances are you wont eleminate algae during that period. I have seen very few tanks cycle and not get algae.

    i agree with alan.....
im stuck with not being able to skim when im ready to cycle cause my skimmer would not have arrived in the country as yet.....
ideally as alan said, it would help with algae reduction etc etc during the initial inevitable
    cycle

you would have some die off and a skimmer would help but a couple small waterchanges will sort it out as well.
