Hi guys ive been running my system without a filter sock for a couple of months now, most of the sump is a dsb with macro algae and 2 hermits. What I would like to know is what are your views on this? Is a sock necessary?

If your parameters are good then there's no need to change anything. Is your skimmer in the first or last chamber?

Parameters are all good, figured all the goggas in the place of refuge will eat anything that makes it past all the fish and skimmer. My skimmer is in the first chamber.

There is no need, but if your nutrients start increasing, its easier to remove the problem then treat it etc

Unless you are pushing a torrent of flow through your sump, those Live rocks below skimma gonna trap detritus. Fir a few rand spent in mechanical filtration to take pressure off biological and chemical filtration, its a no brainer.
Yes you can run it without, but seeing u have the bracket in place..... Not nessesary, but highly advantageous.

I run socks in my system. Very handy when you disturb the sand or blow off the rocks as you can quickly catch and remove the small stuff. I also like it as it catches all uneaten food that might go over the overflow.

Curiosity speaking - Aren't you concerned about soap residue that might get left behind? Obviously you wash it without soap but the machine must keep residue...

I use stockings. You can buy in bulk for next to nothing so instead of cleaning i just throw it away.

I started using filter socks after I noticed quite a bit of detritus build up in my sump, and after that I can clearly see the difference. Params also went way down, so for me it works great.
