i know lol... i just thort it would be easier and more user friendly if we have 1 specific thread dedicated to modz for tl 550 instead of browsing 1 by one looking for one specific thing maybe

    just a thort:blush:

for eg: i just bort 1 on sunday and i have previously heard that one can do a reef oct BH1000 mod,i looked and looked and after some more looking i stumbled accross an old post of @stevengrant with illustrations on how to do the mod,had there been this thread it wouldv taken me 2mins to find

LED's in hood, upgrade the skimmer, built a cheap and nasty media reactor to run phosphate remover and some carbon for chamber 2, upgrade pump, install a led or two and convert 3rd chamber to refugium....:)

Whats the secret....all this info is openly available on this site....and besides it is fun to look for it....you get to see other memebers awesome tanks.....like Len and Mc's.....

I'd say upgrade the skimmer and lights as a basic.

    No major mods on mine.

I have added a media tray in the second chamber, allows me to get better flow through the chemical filtration (and are going to put the bio-cubes in here).

Also my return pump is in the third chamber, leaving my fourth chamber for a refugium and cheato chamber. Added NanoGlo lights to the back of this chamber.

I took out the filter area, drilled some holes and added a sump.

As Butcherman said the main thing is the lights & skimmer. The best choice for lights would be LEDs, second best would be some more t5s. I found a thread of a guy on TASA that has done hi-output leds on a TL450, pretty much the same as the 550 mod would require except the colour. http://www.tropicalaquarium.co.za/showthread.php?10949-My-High-Tech-TL450

The skimmer options are limited due to the space available. There's the Tunze nano and Hydor skimmers that can fit in the filter compartments, but I am still not to convinced about them.

    Hi

    My changes have been minimal:
First compartment - original sponge, filter pad and filter floss (loads :)
    Second compartment - original skimmer
Third compartment - Taken out bio-balls and ceramic rings and replaced with smaller live rock (in media bays), Phosguard and Purigen, and MORE filter pads (cheap and easily replaceable and stops the waterfall noise) and my heater due to water levels
forth compartment - pump sitting on some live rock to avoid vibration noise. Took out UV lamp as it rattled too. I drilled larger holes into the spray bar to increase flow and reduce noise.

18kg of strategically placed live rock.

So. As you can tell my tank was VERY noisy for some reason (woke me up at night at the other side of the house!) but this has been remedied!!

I have purposely waited to upgrade to LEDs as the new 550s are apparently going to come standard with LEDs in the hood and apparently can ordered separately....

Where did you find out about this...? I went surfing the Web the other day and found no info regarding the TL 550 LED Hoods...?...I'm trying to find out if there is going to be a TL 450 LED Hood upgrade...if not...I want to read and find out if the LED's in the 550 will fit in the 450...

Would that be something private or the actual "BOYU" people..? I've been on alibaba and as you see ALL the Tanks are still coming out with 1PL light...usually you would hear about it here before it reaches us...:(
