FLIP!!!!! you know what really grinds me are some LFS!!!!! not to bad mouth any and won't mention any names here but I want to try understand something.

I go to one LFS and ask the price of a 80W t5 ballast, get quoted R695. Go to the next one on my trip ask the same thing, get told it is R545. Next LFS R780, next one R370. Make a phone call to another and it's R250!!!!

How in our fathers name can there be such a huge difference and it's all single ballast, same output and same make!!!!!

    Please explain this to me!!!!!!!
I am so fed up with people ripping other people off!!!!!!

It's not only LFS's and Marines that suffer from this. We live in a free country and can make a choice of where we want to buy stuff. It all hinges on service, backup etc etc.
Same when you buy a car, a house, a fridge etc etc. Shop around to find the best deal.
To label the LFS's as Rip Off's is unfair. If you not happy with the price, go somewhere else.

@Dragonreef, I don't fully agree. I feel that this is a difficult hobby and newbs (such as myself) are greatly reliant on advice. One generally tends to trust the LFS, after all they should be in the know, not so? But then these LFS's use this as an opportunity to exploit and rip off the noob. I think that it is very unfair - it is not like marine shops are all over the place and well advertised, not that easy to shop around if you are new. If I didn't join MASA I would probably have been ripped off blindly!

I agree, shop around and buy where you feel you get the best deal mate. Remember one thing all the LFS has different suppliers for different things. If he buys at a certain place for a certain price he needs to make his profit for the effort and the chance of having the stock for months. (Dead stock costs money) Different locations for shops has different renting rates, salary requirements etc. He has to consider all this when he considers mark-up and buying to re-sell.

We all shop around and look for the best deals buddy. And we absolutely love it when they give us discounts, so shop around and buy where the price is right. :whistling: And another thing is the ballasts is a normal consumable and they aint all buying it from a set marine supplier. That is an ordinary electrical consumable product, innovate and look for an electrical supplier if your not happy. ;)

Sorry to hijack Pugsly. I have to agree with Caleb. I know of a Capetown based LFS that will sell a newb anything without checking first what they will be using it for or what they already have.

Then you get the guys that take a moment in their day and actually chat to you. In particular Johannes from NAAC. He gave me great advice on kalk stirrers which made total sense. First mentioned LFS would have sold me the kalkwasser without blinking an eye, ask what else I need and said "thank you for the business please come again".

Dragonreef - I do agree with you - but as with a car - when I got my Beemer i got quotes from here and free state and natal and the price remained the same for the same car.

I go to the LFS and ask for a price on "A" and when going to the next the price changes drastically for exactly the same thing. I fully understand the various costs from location to location etc but then you expect a difference in price of a couple of rand not R400 rand difference!!!!
