OK so I've been looking around for some bio media ( if that's the correct word) to place in my sump for all the good things to grow and go to work. Now I was wondering about a few of these things.
What do you guys think, positives and negatives? No this isn't a joke Screenshot_2016-06-13-22-18-41.png

I don't think they would offer the same amount of surface area for filtering bacteria compared to Seachem Matrix or even Marine Pure Blocks. Nice idea though.

@EFJ I see what you saying but as you get closer to the Centre of these puff puff pm poms they become more dence and have a better surface area.do you stiff feel they will be inadequate?

The catch is these are a lot of thin strands bunched up which gives the illusion of it's density. Where as with Matrix cubes and Marine Pure Blocks is they are filled with tons of tiny holes which creates a huge amount of surface area (inside and out) for various types of bacteria and organisms etc. Also these holes create various types of environments (lighting, flow run through it and temp) which leads to the variety of life in them. Those sponges work very well for housing and acting as a breeding are for copepods etc.

How long will that plastic last in the salt water before breaking up? I know in freshwater systems, especially koi dams they use that. It will block up as well and need maintenance. I will not use it at all.

pumice stones actually float, because they have trapped air pockets on the inside. Also you don't know what they will leech. Many experts say they will leech chemicals over time. I saw an article about whole islands of floating pumice stones created by volcanos.

Rather go with products tested and trusted.

If you want to go stone, look into Seachem Matrix. Rocks with loads of surface area, a lot more than those to scratch your heals. Available from shops selling Aquarium Depot products. Or they can order it for you.

Alternative competitive product is Marinepure. Available also as rocks, bigger rocks, balls and even blocks. Also provide loads of surface area. Although here I'm not sure which shops do sell them, but you will also find it in non-marine pet shops.

Surprisingly long. If you cut them open they sort of a sausage casing type of thing that can be tied into a very porous filter bag. Used this in the past for carbon and biocubes.

@RiaanP thanks. Guess the best options is always the tried and tested ones. I'm just trying to think outside the box here as the personal rewards are far greater in the end but in saying so there are also risk... And damn this hobby isn't the cheapest on the block.

This is what I was thinking, it's seems to the same kind of material as fishing line. I'd think you would atleast get a few years out of it before it starts degrading and breaking down
