Warren - I am not sure what "huge bioload" means ;-) LOL...
I have 15 fish, of which the average size is about 12-15cm each..... I would constitute that as reasonably hi-'ish....
BUT - that's not what my problem was - the problem was on of either:
1) I bought live rock in the beginning of my fish-keeping, that was EITHER full of detritus already when I got it, or became filled with detritus during the first 6 to 8 months that I kept marine fish, when I over-fed by standard (as a lot newbies does) - without being corrected during this time....
OR:
2) during the WHOLE time that I had my live rock - I had detritus collect INSIDE my live rock, and did not know about this - and the crash of my tank in Jan 07 did not help at all that ALL my invert life (pods, worms, etc) as well as decent bacteria populations, was all wiped out..... WHILE the detritus was still INSIDE the live rock...
So - before I knew it, my tank was completely filled up with nuisance algae..... And it was only during July/August 07 that I started using RO water, and only then too I received my first semi-decent skimmer (the Red Sea Prizm Pro).....
So - the first pics I posted here of my tank, was in October 2007, I had already been able to get SOME algae dying off - BUT, I was not running any phosphate media - did not have any other decent skimmer on my tank, and then ONLY started getting to grips with the real technical bits of keeping marines....
I only THEN started feeding extremely sparingly, doing much more regular water changes.... At the time I had 17 small fish..... BUT - up till then I was feeding commercial frozen food morning AND evening, and not feeding dried foods at all.....
So - you can clearly see the "NEWBIE" mistakes there overall....
Currently, I am still just doing as much as I can to ensure that this does not happen to me again!
I try and get rid of as much detritus out of my tank as possible..... En no - I possibly still don't have enough water flow at +-50 times my tank volume..... I am planning to increase that even more as well.....
