to clarify is it a canister filter you are currently using? if so youcould run a sump if there has been provision in the way of an overflow made to get the water to the sump without pumping it. the sump should be gravity fed. pictures will help a great deal. sumps offer space to add different concepts of filtration. skimmers DSB, refuguim, heaters phos /carbon /calcuim reactors to name but a few could be housed and linked to the sump..

nice diy there brother lets see some pictures of your set-up....

there will be no problem by adding a sump, however remember to clean out the sponge and detritus collecting stuff in that filter atleast once a week....

Hi Wringo and welcome!! What type of media do you run in the external filter ie, carbon, Po4 remover, liferock rubble, sponge etc? To answer your question, I would advise running a sump with a Skimmer in the first compartment, a decent size dsb in the second, a third if possible for extra equipment like a Po4 reactor, carbon reactor and a Carx reactor in the future, with the return pump in the last compartment. You can keep the cannister filter, but PLEASE remove all physical filtration like sponges as well as bio media like bioballs and replace with liferock rubble. I would also advise you not to run the UV sterilizer 24/7 as this could kill most good bacteria and plankton along with the bad ones! And yes in marine tanks a cannister filter has little use except maybe to house extra liferock and in doing so creating a refugium, a sump is a must in a marine tank.:)
