So here is the beginnings of yet another build thread!

I have been running a sump/refugium without a DT for about a 16months:eek: No lies!! Fish and corals have been residing in the refugium, very happily along with a few macro algaes and goggas. I really struggled to get some nice macros for the refugium, in the end I grew whatever I could get my hands on. And the result, a caulerpa jungle!!! I have had absolutely no issues with Caulerpa sertularioides! It has never gone sexual on me!! Every now and again a strand or two will go asexual though;) Amongst the mass of Caulerpa I have a few other algaes growing, including GHA. I have no problem with green hair algae growing in the refugium, as it does not grow very well anyway. I also rely on a very special bacteria...........cyanobacteria!! Ive said it! My cyano serves two purposes, its a great nutrient export, and serves as a visual aid on the quality of my water. Cyano is easy to syphon out and easy to grow. Of coarse I run the risk of it spreading to my display at some point. It has not migrated yet! I must say I think lighting type has a huge impact on cyano, they seem to prefer my refugium lighting over DT LED lighting. Only time will tell!!

I run a severely underrated skimmer! A skimmer rated at a max of 250l system, is not recommended for a larger total volume for obvious reasons. Unless you run a refugium of coarse. My refugium is the heart of my system, without it I would fail. That is one of the reasons why I have been running it without a DT. I wanted it to be mature and healthy before I dedicated a DT too fish and corals.

Refugium pics! Refugium glass doesnt get cleaned too often:whistling:

My DT is 1200 x 500 x 500, coast to coast overflow and two ZA1201 Zetlights over the tank.

Got the tank second hand from Alfie on MASA. http://www.marineaquariumsa.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=26031&d=1424181939

It seems like it was a sump of sorts. A little bit of work and the tank was ready to go! used most of the original holes for two overflow pipes on a coast to coast and one return. Not a show tank! But it will be enjoyed by me:m01:

    Some pics of DT

It is difficult to see in these pics! It is totally open behind the rockwork, all that is on the substrate is the pillar and the odd rock to the left.

My plan is to cover the shelf in as much coral as possible. Mainly soft corals, with the exception of a sun coral or two on the rock in the shadows.

The more I type! The more I realise my spelling and grammar really sucks!LOL!

Just a little update! This tank got a slow leak on the base of tank, forcing me to build a new tank. I then just decided to move all my tank stuff to a different room of the house, my office. Nothing has changed on this setup besides the DT.

    Some crap,blurry cellphone pics:whistling:

Other developments! I have no more cyano in refugium, got rid of my fox face and coral beauty died:m33: All is good!

As soon as I find my card reader I will be able to upload some semi decent pics. For all I know one of the kids could have eaten it:m23:
