The red stuff in our tanks- oscillatoria not cyano

    I have been reading an article in redfish magazine Redfish Aquarium Magazine and it seems cyano is green blue and oscillatoria is what we get in our tanks
    It is in the november 2012 magazine

    In this image of my tank you may see that my substrate is overrun with the green and red cyano.

    oscillatoria is a type of cyano bud

    This is going to be a very good read!

    Oh and "cyano" only refers to a certain set of species of cyanobacteria that seem to appear in every tank, but in reality there are thousands of species of cyanobacteria

    This is correct. Its like us saying "I have acros in my tank"- you have many species of acros, that are all acros but different. Same with cyano- green, blue, red, black (Ive had that one)... all different but all the same family

    On a hobbyist level i assume for it to be fine to speak about it as cyano as not all know the depth of mariculture.

    Exactly... Im pretty sure 99.9% of hobbyests dont have the equipment to accurately ID sps let alone Cyano
