If you wanted to build the ultimate water flow creating aquarium, it would look something like the Flowave, a huge circular flow generating pool that is in a league of its own. The Flowave is 5 meters deep, 25 meters in diameter, and it contains 2.4 million liters (630,000 gallons) of freshwater that it can move every which way.

The Flowave is powered by a carousel of 168 ‘absorbing’ wave makers which are used to push the water while  28 submerged ‘flow-drive units’ can create flow currents every which way. The Flowave is used to generate a variety of different water flow conditions for studying their effects on expensive equipment before it is deployed into the open ocean for testing.

The Flowave is clearly way too expensive to be used for any kind of coral housing or growing conditions, but perhaps some intrepid and very ambitious tinkerer can come up with ways to recreate this setup on a smaller scale for use on very unique coral aquariums. Make sure to watch the video to watch the huge circular waves culminate into huge single, an double water spouts – sure brings a whole new meaning to the term ‘wavemaker’. [Flowave]
