I am not aware of any members that have kept a Cephalopod species tank. I am interested in giving one a go. Done quite a bit of reading and research so far and not sure if @Lord_Blackadder or @SteveZi have given it a go before.

Anyway, here is somewhere to discuss for those interested.

Nice thread. I had a common octo years back. Didnt last very long. 3 things that are important, make sure you either have massive rocks or rocks that are glued down, mine didnt ever move the big ones but he used to toss smaller ones around. They can escape easily, I layered the top of my tank with velcro, everytime he would reach up he would quickly pull it back, must not feel nice at all but he continued to try to escape but never made it past the velcro. Finally, and this is the most important, strong filtration, if he inks himself you are going to be in trouble.

Other than that, really awesome to have. Subdued lighting and they can keep themselves busy for hours on the toys that you give them.

Mine didnt last for much long, just after 3 months and he was gone, was very lucky to get one, most guys dont wanna bring them in.

I've kept bobtail squid on my DSB in sump - they don't live very long but I think there lifespan is only about 4months.
    they're very cool.
Nocturnal, I fed live surf shrimp (Macropetasma sp) but think live mysis will work well.

Tuberculate cuttlefish stays nice and small (8cm) will also do nicely in a specialised system, just keep away from any prized fish! Had one in collecting bucket and it killed 5 fish in less than a minute...

Not sure yet. Something that will last about a year minimum. One of the dwarf species. Blue ring is nice but they only live a few months. But most have a very short lifespan. Will have to check out what is readily available.

They are some nice ones available. Liveaquaria has had some nice looking Caribbean pygmy octopus lately. All cephs usually have a max life span of about 2 years at most.

With a Blue Ring I would be more worried about my lifespan than theirs. lol

Wow that is pretty amazing. They make awesome pets if you can keep them from escaping and inking.

I've always wanted to do a ceph tank & got some Metasepia pfefferi but they didn't live long unfortunately even though I got them in as eggs. The babies were the size of my pinky nail.
NJ good luck with setting up a ceph tank & Tonmo is an awesome forum lots of help on there, some of the guys use astro turf to keep them in the tank.

Thanks Mista, Yes i am excited about this one. Have been curious ever since i saw the octo on TV that predicted the soccer world cup winner. :)

Will start with the tank build early next year. Got others on the go ATM.

Back in Uni days i kept a common octopus going for several months before releasing him. Specifically w.r.t temperate octupos..

    1. ) Very high metabolic rate. Use a lot of oxygen and produce a lot of waste. They are so engaging I found it almost impossible not to overfeed.
    2.) Escape (mentioned)
3.) O. vulgaris can tolerate tropical temps but as it helps with oxygen concentrations best to keep them in a chilled system.

Yup. The only thing to come to terms with is the very short life span. Must be heart breaking after becoming attached to it.......
