i think we need to tput this topic out for discussion.

can anyone help with what actually makes them more effiecient?

prolonged contact time better latching of proteisn in a more confined space?

    thoughts welcomed

No so much contact time as contact time would be determined by the height of the skimmer. The higher the skimmer the better the contact time(i still regret not swopping my blaster 5000 for the deltec AP852)

Its the movement of the bubbles straight up thanks to the bubble plate, compared to them whirling around in all different directions without one that makes the difference. The whirling of the bubbles causes some of the DOC's to fall off and having a bubble plate ensures that all the bubbles go up uniformly.

hmm not really as with the advent of the bubble plate came better pumps. I am sure that if we add the new pumps to some of the older skimmers they will perform Great as well.

Take for example the 1st TS skimmer range with the OTP Pumps those pumps with the needle wheel and the hole for venturi, those pumps hardly pulled any air. Now use the exact same skimmer body and put the new Octo Range with the OTP pump but now having a proper venturi and pin wheel and see how much better it performs.

You will create a foam cannon if the neck is too small and the skimmer will not work properly. It will be fun to watch though.
