Thalion and Wee Man's thread ;) AKA Mike

They are books explaining the terminology of dogs ie the types of ears, top lines what type of feet all the bits about dogs, bit like reading a dictionary but worth the read.

Gotcha, you mean the breed standards for each dog, i've only read the one for the Stafford, funnily enough last week when i was very bored at work:)

But how important is it for a pet owner to have a KC standard pup, rather than, as i do, the pick of the litter, i choose the Dog most dominant over his peers, i find that they are usually calmer dogs and get along better with others.

No they a books explaining the points of all dogs the diff heads, ears, anatomy things like that. You will understand a lot more about dogs after reading it. Including breed STD's.

The "dominant" dog is the most confident one. You should try find the "Puppy Puzzel" some good info on choosing the best puppy, but it is more for show dogs.

Sorry to interrupt you guys.

Thalion, quick question for you if you don't mind.

Any idea if these 'flea collars' one gets at Pick 'n Pay are worthwhile?

the okes are having a serious discussion, dont bother them with crap

Please don't use flee collars, have heard lots of stories about dogs eating them and ether dieing of been very sick. I have used most things and found Ultrum Ultimate to work the best and now only have to use it about 2 times a year. Most vets will tell u to use other products. Please use any chem with Caution.

It is fine Kanga, I think Wee Man is trying to find a book. He has been very quiet.

No, i've been out till now, i coach at my local rugby club, we had a team visit today for a development training and game day, my son scored his first try for the club, he was really pleased with himself (i was rather proud too:)

Thalion, if you could give me some names of books to google i will have a look.

And no don't use flea collars, visit the vet, you need to kill fleas at all levels not just the adults, so get say flea shampoo or the type of flea killer that you put on the dogs' scruff(back of neck) and wash the bedding as well - it helps to kill the eggs.

congrats, something to be proud of

A better way to test a puppy is to take it out of it's normal enviroment ie take it to a place it has not been.

I don't know, watching a pup interacting with the other pup's gives a fair idea of how it should grow up, if it is the dominant pup, then i believe it will grow up confident and more easy going, but the smaller dog, lower in the pecking order will always be trying to prove ot fight for dominance, and therefore a more unsettled dog.

But if you take a dog out of it's own environs would, i suppose give you an idea of how confident (or nosey) it is, whether it sits and shivers or goes round having a sniff, to be honest i just trust my instinct as to whether a dog is a good one or not. it seems to work, other people trust my judgement and my training methods

Ok at what age do you test the puppy and that gives you a good idea of what it will look like?

I think at a young age it's a best guess, you really need ot look at the parents, grandparents etc to get a good idea as to what the dog would probably look like, i mean you can check for the obvious like; size and shape of ears, head, body etc, i like to see nice big feet too, also how the mouth shuts (i.e. not over or undershot bite) you could look at me and my wife to see what my kids would look like or a fair idea, i.e. skin colour, hair colour eye colour and physical build, but unless you have seen the family tree you can never tell.
My older dog Bosun, now 11 years old, was one of 5 pups, all boys, he is very dark brindle (almost black) his brothers were one red and three tan and white brindles, quite a mixture and both parents were dark brindle???

I think I had better post pic's of my tank to make up for all this dog talk.

Hmmmm perhaps you're right, my fish look neglected:blushing: :)
