    Hi
What is a decent yet affordable test kit to get to test water parameters etc?
For my tropical tank I use a strip test kit which is quite accurate
What do most of you guys use and how often do you test the water

I just use the "normal" test kits on the "marine" side of any LFS ..
At the moment I use Redsea Pro test kit ... haven't tried any other kits yet ...

Salifert test kits as you will be able to buy a kit a month, helping with a once off money outlay immediatly. I test my water every Friday. Start with the basic tests like. PH, Calcium, Magnesium, but make sure you have a refractometer or hydrometer as well.(to test the salinity)

Salifert is a good affordable test kit...

the main params to test are
    PO4
    NO3
    Ca
    Mg
    Alk
    pH

you can get NH3 (ammonia) this should always read 0
nitrite is not important, its a by product of NH3 conversion while toxic, its less toxic in saltwater, but should be 0 too

If you've got lps or sps corals then you will need the mag/ca kit. But if you've only got soft corals then no major urgency to test those parameters, but the kh and nitrate one is important no matter what corals you have.

Yes, but don't worry about the kh during cycling. That you can do afterwards once you start adding livestock.

I also require test kits for reef parameters. PO4 is apparently useless in Salifert. Is Salifert the only recomendation here?

i use Red Sea test kit... always accurate, nicely packed so you never lose you test vials and very easy to use. also value for money is probably the best deal out there.
the salifert test kits go for around 180 rand for 50 tests, the Red Sea Reef Foundation Alk, Ca, Mg all in one kit goes for around 650 and thats for 75 test each. so it actually works out cheaper to buy the quality bigger test kit than the one that initially looks cheaper
