I have a system similar to that.... I have a el-cheapo web-cam, which connect to my one laptop. On the laptop, I have web-cam SERVER software running, which includes a type of web-server - which I can configure on which IP port I can run in on...
Then, on my ADSL router, I have created a "forwarded IP PORT" - which means, that this specific port on my ADSL router, get's forwarded to the IP address, of my laptop (internal).

The external (PUBLIC) IP address on my ADSL router changes every day, so, I make use of the server: NO-IP.com, to register a "public domain name", which is then linked to the PUBLIC IP ADDRESS, on my ADSL router.

And then - I run a little application on my laptop, which updates my PUBLIC IP address on my router, every time it changes, to link up with the server.PUBLIC-DOMAIN-NAME which is hosted by "No-IP.com".....

In this way - I can access my own web-cam server, on my own laptop, sitting at home, while I am away, to look at my tank, or home, etc..... LIVE - while I am away from home! ;)

Hope this give you guys/gals some idea!

actually, might have a better plan...

    1. download skype.
2 under options, go advanced, and ask it to answer all calls automatically and start the webcam up automatically.
    3. leave system running whilst away and every so often call yourself using a different account to check on your tank!

    hope it works tho ;)

    OK - cool - step-by-step:
    1) get a USB web-cam, and connect it to your PC/laptop
    2) IF you have an ADSL router, from i.e. Telkom, you can "manage" it yourself...... it SHOULD have a web-based interface to manage/administrate it.... You should also know what the internal IP address/user login is of your router (Telkom should be able to assist you in find this info - t should be in the manual of your Telkom ADSL router)
    3) for Windoze machines, search on Google for "Webcam XP"
Or alternaviley - any Windows webcam server application software.....
    4) Install this software, and confirm that you can get your webcam to work.....
    5) Webcam XP, works on port 8080
    6) using "cmd" on your PC/laptop, and "ipconfig", confirm your pc/laptop's IP address..
    7) then: login to your ADSL router, and go into the NAT section, search fot IP FORWARDING........ then, add your pc/laptop's ip addy, and the port no: 8080 here............ then - when accessing the public ip address (the ip you get from your ISP), on port 8080, your access should be forwarded to your PC/laptop's ip, and port # 8080......
    8) then, using your web-browser, go to: No-IP - Dynamic DNS, Static DNS for Your Dynamic IP
    9) trgister here, select/type a domasin name for your pc - download the no-ip Windows client......... install this client on on yout Windows pc/laptop......

then you are done........... you should then be able to access your web-cam server software, at the domain name, you gave, and ip port # 8080, from ANY external web-connection (ie. from your cell-phone 3G or internet cafe)
