    Hello!
I currently own a Juwel Lido 120, and looking for an additional longer tank for a new freshwater setup.
While browsing choices the price difference between a Lido 240 and a basic glass tank is huge.

So is it necessarily a good choice to stick with a 'branded' tank (Juwel, Boyu, Fluval etc), or rather save some money and get a basic glass tank (ex cabinet) and source lights and filtration separately?

I've already replaced the lighting and filtration on my Lido 120 so I'm not interested in the parts their aquarium includes, but what other benefits does a branded tank bring over a basic glass tank? What do you prefer?

Fyi. a Lido 240 is R12,000, a basic glass tank of the same size is R1200.

Definitely standard tank. So much more versatile.

I'd rather go for a tank made by a reputable builder. that way you can have a tank made exactly to your specifications.
But if you do go the custom build route, remember to factor in price of cabinetry, light unit, etc. You can't really compare price of a tank to that of a complete unit.

Ok thank you. Do you think the tanks you find pre-built at a LFS are reputable? How would I check? This is where I come unstuck, and default to thinking getting a well known brand is 'better' and easier.
    I'm eyeing up a 121 x 45 x 45 (4 foot tank) at my LFS. The cabinet/sideboard I've located at a local furniture store.

A lot of people buy pre-built tanks from the shops and don't have any issues. Which shop are you planing on buying from?
Check for even seams on the tank, no bubbles in the silicone, do the panels fit together nicely(ie cut t the right size), dos it have bracing, what thickness is the glass?

Thanks again, I saw some custom tanks at Aquatic Vision in Brakenfell and Pet World today. Both seemed suitable.
So I'll add up everything else I need and go from there :)

If you in that side of Cape town, go and have a look at RB MArines as well.
Another thing to consider is what filtration you will run and whether or not you'll one day convert the tank to marine.

branded tanks are just to pricey ....you could do so much more with the cash if you built a custom tank
