I want a new tank and I'm thinking of building it myself. I would like to go 1200 X 600 X 600. What glass would you guys recommend? Overflow? Any advice would be apreciated, at this stage, it's still just an idea and I'd like to pick everybodies brains before I do anything. This will be the first tank I have built and I want to do it right!

Euro Bracing including a good centre brace.

Try and maximise the length of the overflow, that way you keep the weir water height down. Much easier to screen and prevent fish going into the overflow.
I personally like using one of the short sides as an overflow.

I would like to have 3 viewing sides. Would it be possible to use the whole length of the back as a skinny overflow. I've never seen it done before, is there a reason? It is just an off the wall idea that popped up, and I'm curious about it.

Do you think I would have to brace the overflow if I did this? It is a long pane of glass and it would have a lot of pressure against it...

nope, as it would be the same thickness as the rest of the tank. but the builder can brace internally...

    Just some advise RE overflows...

Either build it so skinny that no LS can get in, or build it just big enough for your hand to fit inside incase any LS falls/swims in!! O and make sure the overflow has a high enough water level that if any fish do fall in that they can survive until you notice and or can get them/it out.

Just a thought out of personal experiance!!

    1200x600x600
    10mm sides and 12mm base
    50mm overflow outlets

to see this working, look at Manic's Zeo Neo reef thread

Nice, thats exactly how my tank looks, you would know though because you helped me build it. I went for a 1200mm x 800mm x 500mm tank out of 12mm starfire rimless.

Thanks @belindamotion, I did go to their website, but could not find mention of starphire glass. Best to phone them and get all the info, thanks
