I need your help please. My wife was cleaning the tank and managed to crack the tank glass brace the goes over the top in the centre (not sure what she did yet). The tank does have bracing all around the side but I assume this is fairly an important brace.

What should I do now. Just replace the brace with new glass. Get cable bracing. Will the tank survive with this brace cracked?

    Thanks
    Paul

Ok then there is very little stress on the two panels and no real immediate action required.

What you can do as a temp fix till you get the brace fixed is strap it with Sellotape. The wide packaging one. Layer 4 or 5 pieces on top of each other and then stretch them across where the brace is.

You have a few options to fix.

Silicone a new piece of glass on top of the old brace. This however will interfere with your LED lights shining through.

Cut the old brace out and replace.

    Add a SS wire brace.

    Get another piece of glass.

Drain tank at least half way. More would be better. you can flatten your rock stack if needed.

Put heater in tank and drum where the water is kept, plus sump. Keep temp the same. Plus powerhead in drum. Redirect return pump to first chamber in skimmer. Move powerheads in display down.

Carefully remove the old brace. Or you can silicone new glass directly on top of the old one if you want to forever remind your wife as to what she did

Let it cure for at least a day.

Next day, put return pump line in its original place. Refill from drum into first chamber of sump, let the return pump run while doing it.

That is if you cannot drain display completely, or do not have space to keep rocks, corals and fish happy for a day.

so you know what to do, rather remove the old brace completely

You can also use those straps that you tie down stuff on back of bakkies or trailers. Just put 2 around the tank to make sure it held together.

Just hook the 2 end hooks into each other, and have the ratchet part on top of the tank so that the most pull action will be on top where you need it. Do not over tighten them.

I replaced a short end panel on a running sump using these. Just drained the skimmer chamber and left full DSB and return in place.

And put something behind the places where metal can touch the glass. Lastly, work carefully, no point in replacing the brace, if you bang the tank thereafter with the ratchets.

Please note that those straps RiaanP is refering to can hold/pull 4.46 tons, so take it very very easy. That would be the best to use and resilicone a new brace in place maybe a little bit thicker glass brace this time just to be on the safe side ;)

Methinks that @bucherman and @dallasg would be perfect to show how to fix it and have the glass too. Make a video of how you do it and post it here.

That way everyone learns how :)
